The Pharmacy Technician, Senior provides pharmaceutical care to patients by demonstrating proficient abilities in complex IV admixtures (including cytotoxic compounding and TPN compounding), navigating and utilizing the pharmacy information system and filling and distributing medications in the appropriate manner. The Pharmacy Technician, Senior may also have additional skills such as RobotRX skills, operation room skills, controlled substance skills or packing skills. The Pharmacy Technician, Senior services are provided in compliance with Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.


+ -Assist in the investigation and resolution of missing medications or other medication use issues.
-Reduce turn-around-time for needed medications by delivering medications directly to the nurse
-Facilitate transfer of medications (including bulk medications)
-Document daily activities and pharmacy-nursing interventions and review with Manager regularly.
-Demonstrate mastery of all technical aspects of pharmacy including daily operations, automation and technology, controlled substances, packaging and sterile products/ IV admixtures.
-Participate in reporting of medication errors and adverse drug events to the pharmacist or Medication Safety Manager
-Perform assigned job responsibilities with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

+ Administrative/Training:
- Provides direction and leadership for all technical aspects associated with medication use process.
- Assists in coordinating daily activities and development of workflow to maximize productivity and efficiency.
- Assists in training other Pharmacy Technicians in determining their ability to function in all areas of the Pharmacy department.
- Participates in orientation of new pharmacy staff.

+ Communication:
-Act as a liaison between the central pharmacy and nursing staff on designated units.
-Demonstrate a service orientation toward patients, staff and visitors. Convey a positive, professional image at all times.
-Possesses good organizational and problem solving skills and work daily to improve communication between pharmacy and nursing.
-Triage phone calls received in the main pharmacy or on the units.

+ Crash Carts/Technology:
- Support and coordinate all aspects of emergency medication refill process.
- Provide technical assistance to nursing (i.e, scanning bar codes or medication orders) when needed
- Review dispensing and stocking reports to investigate discrepancy reports and perform risk management activities.
- Assist in restocks, discrepancy resolution and general troubleshooting of automated dispensing cabinets.
- Assist with changes related to drug stock in all drug storage areas including automated dispensing cabinets.

+ Distribution: Develop and maintain positive and productive service relationships during medication distribution process.

+ Distribution: Participate in the distribution of medication including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts and the delivery of controlled substances per department policy and state and federal requirements

+ Distribution: Retrieve medications that have been discontinued and return (and credit if necessary) them to the appropriate pharmacy area.

+ Filling: Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting and stocking practices. Initial and date products as required.

+ Filling: Consistently has the ability to work and instruct in the Sterile Product area preparing cytotoxic and hazardous drugs (e.g. chemotherapy) using proper aseptic technique with a high level of skill and expertise.

+ Filling: Possesses the ability to work and instruct in the Sterile Product area preparing TPN (Total Parentral Nutrition) solutions with a high level of skill and expertise. Demonstrates understanding of the calculations involved in nutritional solution preparation.

+ General: Assist in training other Pharmacy Technicians in determining their ability to function in ALL areas of the Pharmacy department.

+ General: Demonstrate a high level of accuracy and skill in maintaining controlled substance records and the distribution process for controlled substances.

+ General: Demonstrate a high level of knowledge understanding the laws associated with the purchasing and distribution of controlled substances.

+ General: Demonstrate a service orientation toward patients, staff and visitors. Conveys a positive, professional image at all times.

+ General: Demonstrate competency in performing high skill level activities in MULTIPLE areas such as sterile products/IV admixtures, controlled substances, robot operation, packaging operations, and operating room.

+ General: Develop and maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.

+ General: Ensure that all medications in all areas have been safely and securely stored according to Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations. Audit and maintain accurate records for controlled substances. Assure that all such drugs are stored and dispensed in compliance with Federal, State, and Department Regulations

+ General: Maintain all pertinent documentation as required. This may include eye wash logs, refrigerator logs, perpetual inventory logs etc. Maintain all patient information and records. Maintain the pharmacy computer system as required.

+ General: Maintain and update automated med stations, unit and department stock, emergency boxes, and crash carts.

+ General: Participate in departmental quality improvement activities in order to continually improve and evaluate pharmaceutical care as reflected by operational and patient care indicators.

+ General: Perform and document regular cleaning and maintenance activities of ALL areas. Perform assigned job responsibilities with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

+ General: Prepare reports as required to support pharmacy activities.

+ General: Procure and maintain adequate inventory levels on daily basis in applicable areas such pharmacy medication stock rooms, automated medication carousels, and automated dispensing machines.

+ General: Provide and received information (via telephone, person-to-person, or written) to hospital personnel, patients and visitors. Refer all drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists.

+ General: Provide direction and leadership for ALL technical aspects associated with medication preparation in the pharmacy department. Assist in coordinating daily activities, organizing duties and responsibilities, and developing the workflow of the technical staff to maximize productivity in MULTIPLE areas.

+ General: Use computer skills to process and maintain all patient information and records.

+ Investigational: Assist in the procurement, accountability, storage, preparation and distribution of investigational and study drugs.

+ Unit Inspection:
- Under supervision of pharmacist, conducts monthly unit inspections of designated areas of units and pharmacy.
- Performs expiration removal according to procedure.
- Maintains order and function of medication rooms on a daily basis by pulling discontinued or expired medications and removing unneeded medications from automated medication cabinets.


+ Completion of high school diploma or equivalent or Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program

+ Three years of previous pharmacy technician experience is required

+ Pharmacy Technician Certification required

+ Demonstrated competency in SIX of the following FOURTEEN skills:

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

+ Pharmacy Technician Certification required

+ CCM training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter

+ Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal

+ Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal

+ Act 73 FBI Clearance

+ Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

+ Comprehensive Crisis Management
