Senior Manager Strategic Initiatives - Health Plan

The Sr. Manager, Strategic Initiatives will assume a high
impact role within UPMC Health Plan and will become a key contributor to the
successful development and execution of major business innovation capabilities
through partnerships with significant constituents. The position will focus on
assessing emerging data opportunities, framing new business opportunities,
implementing population health management strategy and coordinating and
managing a varying portfolio of projects. The Sr. Manager, Strategic
Initiatives will help develop and grow the Department of Health Economics
portfolios by translating market trends, research and new data source insight
into new capabilities that impact and grow UPMC's core, adjacent or emerging
market segments. The Sr. Manager, Strategic Initiatives will report to the
Senior Director, Department of Health Economics.


+ Business Development and UPMC Strategy
Manage the proposal development process: develop content that describes the proposed solutions and the value that UPMC can bring; work with Senior Director to construct pricing structure; build the implementation plan; and create associated presentation to present to potential client(s).
Drive efforts to develop business cases to evaluate opportunities by facilitating strategic discussions, conducting broad market analysis, and/or working with Marketing Intelligence to gather information.
Translate discussion and decisions into effective presentations tailored to audience and purpose.
Synthesize and translate complex analytic, business and scientific information to support business cases.
Drive the research, writing, design and production of a variety of business documents. Produce deliverables which may include: market assessments, presentations, business plans, etc.

+ Business Development and UPMC Strategy(con't)
Collaborate with Finance, Health Economics and Business Development Manager to build financial analysis and determine financial feasibility.
Maintain strong relationship with executive team to solicit information, gain approval and develop strategies for new opportunities.
Manage strategic business initiatives and develop reports that can be distributed to management team to ensure that up to the minute information about business development activities is available to all.
Analyze and evaluate the critical components of UPMC product strategy and, based on such evaluations, suggest and develop appropriate strategic initiatives to meaningfully improve UPMC business metrics.
Develop and monitor key performance metrics to evaluate the success of strategic initiatives and recommendations.
Manage the strategy development process: including developing content that describe the proposed recommendations and the value that UPMC can bring; and building the execution/implementation plan.
Complete special projects as assigned.
Manage and develop staff

+ Consumer Innovation and Population Health Management
Help identify solutions/services to meet those needs.
Conduct market scans and participate in workgroups (ABC, ACHP, NBGH) to stay abreast of national health policy issues identify trends and opportunities for innovation. Reach out to other Integrated Financing and Delivery Systems to discuss emerging consumer-focused and population health topics to help us stay on top of new ideas in the market and build relevant relationships.
Research, analyze, and recommend new products, processes, and technology that introduce new capabilities and/or improve robustness of current practices and member experience.
Assess and contribute to strategy and oversee strategy execution, including the assessment of current initiatives and recommendations for process improvements.
Work to continuously improve the overall UPMC Health Plan member experience as well as UPMC Health Plan book population health. Recommend specific initiatives to improve such experiences.

+ Identify, evaluate, and prioritize product opportunities for UPMC Medicare (SNP and Non-SNP) products to best achieve strategic goals. Research, analyze, and recommend new products/ benefits, expansions, and/or modifications to existing Medicare products that introduce new capabilities and/or improve current products and member experience
Manage a team of analysts and consultants to achieve business goals. Supervise, train, and mentor standing and ad hoc teams (often including members outside of the Department). Develop and recruit talent. Develop, mentor and preserve a high-performance team. Manage and develop the team, including hiring, goal setting, performance management, coaching, projects, and training
Maintain rigorous analytical and data synthesis skills; develop pro forms and other decision support models to guide strategy and key operational decisions.

+ Manage a portfolio of multiple projects from inception through implementation including milestones, deliverables, resources and risks. Maintain visibility on project status while clearly communicating project progress and risk mitigation paths. Complete projects in a timely manner.
Understand current organization priorities and objectives.
Complete Department and other assigned administrative responsibilities in a timely and effective manner.


+ Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Public Health, or related required.

+ A minimum of ten years of experience in business development (preparing business documents); project management (developing work plans, tracking progress, coordinating teams composed of individuals from multiple departments, completing deliverables, etc.); and advanced analytics (manipulating datasets, interpreting data, communicate complex analytical concepts in easy to understand ways, etc.). or Masters degree and five years experience preferred

+ Knowledge and understanding of health care insurance or health care industry is preferred.

+ Strong verbal and written communication skills and leadership skills.

+ Demonstrated ability to work effectively across internal and external organizations.

+ Demonstrated success in capability development.

+ Strong experience with SAS and SQL is strongly preferred.

+ Demonstrated success in managing a team to meet corporate goals

+ Ability to manage teams on complex technical projects is preferred

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

PMP Certification preferred.
