Senior Strategy Consultant

As an integral
member of our Analytics team within the Division of Health Economics, the
Senior Strategy Consultant will be exposed to a wide variety of clients and
unique business problems. This position will help our clients improve financial
and clinical performance, improve patient outcomes, develop strategies for the
future, and gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. Projects will address strategy and program development
issues across UPMC and provides: (1) research (e.g., identify key business/clinical
dynamics), (2) development (e.g., create business model to manage risk; create
operating model to optimize outcomes), and (3) coordination (e.g., synthesize
the varied perspectives/requirements from diverse clients-clinical, regulatory,
finance, etc.-into a cohesive operating model) to support a portfolio of
projects. This position requires extensive analytical expertise as well as the
ability to communicate results and implications through business plan and
presentation writing. Successful candidates will be comfortable in
a fast-paced environment, inquisitive, synthesize information quickly, possess
good intuition, and project confidence.


+ Administrative. Maintain Department's infrastructure (e.g., library of business model options). Complete Department and other assigned administrative responsibilities in a timely and effective manner.

+ Develop and mentor staff. Mentor and develop the Department's analysts and consultants; develop skills and refine management acumen.

+ Manage a portfolio of multiple projects and clients. Proactively identify and appropriately frame projects in response to market/industry dynamics, business unit priorities, and system-wide priorities. Frame and integrate these projects with business unit activities. Manage projects from inception (business planning) through implementation (start-up operations). Complete projects in a timely manner.

+ Produce project teams' deliverables-road maps/strategy presentations, business plans, market profiles/assessments, presentations, etc. Translate teams' discussions and decisions into effective presentations (tailored to audience and purpose). Synthesize data into actionable information for diverse audiences.
Coordinate team members' activities to ensure timely completion of deliverables.
Coordinate with other Departments (e.g., Legal and Finance) and operating units to ensure strategies address the full continuum of issues. Communicate and collaborate with internal and external constituents to ensure coordinated and effective strategies are pursued while work is streamlined. Maintain rigorous analytical and data synthesis skills; in particular develop pro formas and other decision support models to guide strategy and key operational decisions.

+ Support senior executives (Director of Strategic Planning, VP of Strategic Planning, Sr. Vice President, and hospital Presidents). Understand current organizational priorities and objectives. Complete special projects as assigned.

+ Work with operating unit executives (e.g., Hospital Presidents, ICSD business development team) to develop and start new initiatives, as well as critically evaluate and refine existing programs. Ensure client needs are met. Identify and document new industry and market trends; understand and explain implications for UPMC.
Develop new and better ways to convey market and external dynamics to diverse audiences. Continuously track and assess changes in UPMC's markets.
Negotiate arrangements with partners and affiliates (physicians, hospitals, vendors, etc.). Facilitate affiliation partner working groups to develop new programs.


+ Masters level degree in Business Administration, Health Administration or a quantitative field of study (e.g., mathematics, economics, sciences, finance, etc.) with a minimum of five years of relevant experience (e.g., strategy, planning, business development, quantitative decision support, finance) required; or a Bachelor degree with seven years of experience.

+ Prior experience should include project management (developing work plans, tracking progress, coordinating teams composed of individuals from multiple departments, completing deliverables, etc.); advanced analytics (manipulating complex datasets, interpreting data, communicating complex analytical concepts in easy to understand ways, etc.); business development (e.g., writing/authoring business plans for new operations); and negotiations with external audiences (e.g., secure affiliation agreements).

+ Experience in a consulting, investment banking, corporate or competitive strategy, or service line management environment is preferred; some operational experience is preferred.

+ Given the breadth of projects spanning all UPMC divisions, the candidate must exhibit knowledge and understanding across the full continuum of services and markets.

+ Exceptional Excel and PowerPoint skills are required.

+ Due to fluid nature and visibility of the departments work, flexible work hours are required and often exceed 50 hours per week.

+ Previous experience in health care and/or health insurance experience is strongly preferred.

+ Experience with Six Sigma or continuous process improvement is a plus.

+ Expertise in data visualization preferred.

+ Experience with Tableau is also a plus.

+ Strong SAS experience is strongly preferred.

+ Experience with R and Python is a plus.

+ Experience in managing teams on large/complex projects.
